Brain Injury Attorney in Pennsylvania and New Jersey

When It Comes to Major Injuries, Experience Counts

A brain injury can drastically change your life and have a deep impact on the lives of others in your family. Sometimes called traumatic brain injuries, or TBI, brain injuries occur when a force strikes the head, causing direct physical damage to the brain. Another type of brain injury can be a result of toxins like lead paint, or a chemical reaction to a dangerous drug. A severe brain injury, or neurological injury, can have a devastating effect on a victim’s life.

Brain injury victims may lose their ability to remember, think clearly or control their emotions. Victims can slip into comas and suffer permanent mental and physical impairment. A brain injury may adversely affect a victim’s relationship with a spouse.

The leading causes of brain injuries include falls and auto accidents, but many other types of accidents can cause brain injuries. The skull does not necessarily have to fracture or break open for the brain to sustain a traumatic injury – a concussion caused by a fall can cause permanent injury. When the integrity of the skull is compromised, the victim has suffered an “open head injury.” This type of injury is usually the result of significant force such as a motorcycle accident.

If you or a loved one has suffered a brain injury, our firm can help you seek justice. Attorneys at Flager & Associates, PC often work with medical experts like neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuropsychologists to determine the extent of a client’s impairment. We work relentlessly to help our clients secure the maximum compensation to which they are entitled.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy/ CRPS

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) and a related condition known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) often are chronic nerve disorders that affect areas of the body that have sustained injury. RSD and CRPS share some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia, including chronic pain. RSD and CRPS commonly is found in the arms and legs and may be connected to injuries sustained in an automobile accident or other high-speed impacts.

Sometimes RSD and CRPS injuries go unnoticed, but become severe upon a subsequent injury. People who previously developed RSD and CRPS but were able to cope with the discomfort may later suffer a relatively minor injury, such as a fall down. Suddenly, RSD and CRPS victims may find they are unable to cope with increasing pain levels.

CRPS Symptoms Include Skin Sensitivity

RSD and CRPS symptoms include significant changes in the color and temperature of the skin over the affected body part or limb. Victims may experience burning pain, excessive sweating and skin sensitivity. Some victims may be unable to work. Frequently, tissue injury triggers CRPS I, which describes all patients with CRPS symptoms but with no underlying nerve injury. People with CRPS II experience the same symptoms. Their cases, however, clearly are associated with a nerve injury.

Dr. Robert J. Schwartzman, professor and chairman of neurology at the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, has researched CRPS for more than 30 years. He has identified the four major components of CRPS:

  • Pain, allodynia, hyperalgesia, hyperpathia
  • Swelling
  • Autonomic dysregulation (malfunctioning of the autonomic nervous system)
  • Motor dysfunction

Diagnosing CRPS and RSD can be complicated. Don’t expect insurance companies to help determine responsibility. Our firm can help you by using our resources and experience.
